  • Crawfish, also called crawdads or crayfish, look like tiny lobsters and are typically between 3 inches and 6 inches long.
  • They are a low-fat source of protein and essential vitamins and minerals.
  • A 3-ounce serving of cooked crawfish contains 70 calories and 14 grams of protein along with trace amounts of fat and carbohydrates.
  • When you eat a serving of crawfish, you get 30 percent of the daily value for vitamin B-12, 10 percent of the DV for niacin and folate and 4 percent of the DV for riboflavin, thiamine and vitamin B-6. These B vitamins are essential for nervous system function, turning the food you eat into energy and keeping your liver, eyes, skin and hair healthy.

Fish and shellfish are brain food. Nutritionists now are convinced that crayfish, and other shellfish like lobster, crab and shrimp, do indeed have the nutrients that stimulate mental energy.

The more I studied the subject, the more I realized that crayfish have a super healthy combination of nutrients from its almost pure form of protein to its healthy amount of Omega-3 Fatty Acids which we now know are among the most beneficial fats we can eat. Crayfish protein has large amounts of the amino acids tyrosine that mentally energizes the brain.

These amino acids are supposed to make you think and react better and to be more attentive and motivated and mentally energetic. Could this be the reason why crayfish parties and crawfish festivals are so lively?

These dried shrimps definitely have a strong smell and it wafted right out of the shipping box. This is certainly concentrated flavor! It is quite a large bag, but you only need a little bit in fish soups and broths to bring out the flavor. It does provide a huge depth of flavor, but some of my shrimps were crushed to a powder, probably from shipping but the powder is just as good. I love eating dried squid and shrimps by themselves, but these are quite flavorful and not necessarily for snacking purposes like many dried asian seafood snacks. If you want to really enhance the seafood taste of your dishes without spending a lot of money on seafood or cooking it for hours, this is an easy way to add flavor. I might try it in my clam chowder next to get it more depth. I do wish that this came in a better bag that could contain the smell or a container because its odor is quite strong.

Tasty for use sprinkled over rice, or you can use them in recipes for krill cakes though they are a little larger than I like.
They smell very strong when you open the bag, but once you soak them and rinse they tone down a little.
The fish are mostly whole and plump up nicely.

Simmered, I use these tiny shrimp/crayfish make an excellent concentrated broth which adds complex flavor to fish soups and stews along with a wide range of dishes. Herbs, sautéed onions, garlic and whole peppercorns may be added to the pot but I usually keep it plain to keep flexibility so the broth works well in more recipes.
Roughly, I use about 1/4 of the 8 ounce package in a quart and a half of water and slowly simmer covered for an hour to an hour and a half, adjust based on individual taste. The broth can also be prepared In a slow cooker. I try to make the broth on days when I can keep the windows open to help dissipate the scent.
After straining the shrimp from the liquid I freeze the broth in ice cube trays designated for this purpose. When solid, remove cubes from the trays keeping them well-sealed in large zip-lock freezer bags until needed.
The cubes are a fast way to add flavor intensity and depth to a variety of fish based dishes. A couple of ice cubes in the water when cooking rice or using the broth in place of or in combination with chicken stock gives an extra kick to Jambalaya or in shrimp paella, seafood polenta or risotto.

The health benefits of this product are very impressive. They are packed with protein and vitamins, as well as unadulterated with any weird additives. The food is best described as small dried shrimp.
Having never eaten anything like this, I just munched on a few out of the bag. I thought they were good, but they aren’t for everyone as they have a fishy smell. You can also use them in cooking as another reviewer noted. The bag is a great size and you can use this for a few weeks. They are packed with flavor if you want to use these in a gumbo or a soup.
I think they are a great option, even if they are a little pricey. Give these a shot! If you already enjoy them, trust that this is a quality product.

First of all, this is really not for everybody. Many people are bound to detest this product. As other reviewers said, this isn’t anything like crayfish. It’s tiny little shrimp that are dried and salted to the point where all you are getting are the tiny heads, tails and shells. This is clearly not health food because it’s extremely salty. So if you are looking for something healthy and if you crave crayfish, move on because this is definitely not for you.
However, if you can’t resist very salty, very fishy snacks with a pungent smell of dried salted fish, this will be a dream snack for you. When I first got the package in the mail, I almost threw it away before even opening it because the fishy smell was overwhelming. The look was off-putting, too. But then I tried it and oh, goodness. I had to tear myself away from it because it was so delicious. I know that salty snacks are not good for me at all but it’s very very hard to resist. If I were a beer-drinker, this would be the perfect accompaniment.

These are a staple spice in West African cooking, but this is the first time I’ve had a bag of these at home. Tried two things with them so far, the first is a tomato and onion soup flavored with these “crayfish” whole. It turned out a bit like the soups I’ve had in Ghana, but needed some habanero hot sauce added in at the end. The second try was a fish stock made by boil some of the shrimp in water and then straining. Makes a VERY strongly favored stock. Probably something that could work in a Japanese style meal.

I enjoy trying new foods, and when JEB FOODS offered both their dried Crayfish and Egusi ground melon seeds to try, I was intrigued. I looked online and found many Nigerian soups and stews which incorporate both ground crayfish and egusi, and tried a recipe for Nigerian Egusi Stew (see pic of this JEB FOODS ground crayfish next to JEB FOODS Egusi). I had to substitute several items: chicken for the beef (that’s what I had), coconut oil for the red palm oil, spinach for the bitter greens, but i was happy to have the actual ground crayfish, which isn’t a typical ingredient you find at the supermarket here. This particular product is the whole, not ground Crayfish, but I am using my ground crayfish info here, as both the ground and whole crayfish taste the same, and the whole crayish are tiny as is.
Making this stew, I used about 1/3 a cup of the ground crayfish (tastes and smells like what you would expect dried seafood to taste and smell like), which is lightly salty even without any added salt. The stew itself had a hearty feel and pleasant taste, and felt very home-y, like something you’d find very satisfying, esp. if you grew up eating this. I don’t have much to compare this particular brand’s crayfish with any other brand, but it added an umami-type flavoring that gave a good depth to this tasty stew. I think the crayfish is an important ingredient for the stew, and it would not have tasted nearly as good without it. The way I view this seasoning is as one might use or think of anchovies- they are strong on their own, but they bring out and amplify the savory flavors in a dish.

These look great – they sure smell like the real deal!! I was definitely clear by the reviews that it is mini dried shrimp. I’m going to make a gumbo this weekend and will grind and use some of these. Will be searching for more fun ways to use these in recipes as it seems like a pretty cool way to add a little spunk to dishes.

Crayfish is often used in West African cuisines, and it is fun to experiment with various “authentic” recipes.
But I’ve found that dried crayfish like this excellent example makes a very flavorful addition to beans and to lentil soups and stews. I sometimes grind them up into a powder, or more often just add them as they are to the pot — they add a bit of crunch to the final blend.
Very aromatic and the food values look very good indeed.
