    Truly is hot.

Whooo this has a good kick. You definitely can’t substitute it one for one where cayenne pepper is called for, but as long as you calibrate for heat it’s delicious. It seems to have a greater depth of flavor and kick than other ground red peppers we’ve tried. Knowing it has this much of a kick it will take us forever to get through the bag but it’s so delicious we don’t mind.

Excellent quality strength. I’ve found that some so called hot red pepper really is more like plain chili pepper.

  9. Rated 5 out of 5

This pepper is really awesome. It is flavorful and considerably hot. I enjoyed it a lot.

One pound of red pepper powder goes a LONG way. This pepper is very hot – and I know that term varies according to how hot you like it. So, for reference, I grow ghost, habanero and jalapeño peppers. My family likes hot food! On that scale, I would rate this compared to jalapeño rather than habanero or ghost peppers – in other words, I can imagine it being hotter, but too hot and its not even enjoyable. If you think black pepper is hot, this will rock your world. If you think ghost peppers are mild, you may not find this to be hot enough. But if you are the average person who likes their food hot and spicy, this will not disappoint.

Good spicy heat. We used it for chilly mix, and what a nice warm bite! Little goes a long way, and if you are using for first time, I suggest you be cautious as this spice is hot, and not mild. I used it with vegetables, or spice up the chicken. Quality of the ground pepper looks decent. Smells like ground pepper with no musky smell.

This JEB FOODS GOURMET AFRICAN RED PEPPER POWDER (Extremely Hot, 1 lb/16oz) is a huge, restaurant-sized, reclosable bag of ground, red hot African red pepper. It’s delicious, but to say it’s “extremely hot” is almost an understatement. I don’t know where it actually stands on the food science heat scale, but it makes me think of habaneros!
I ruined a vegetable dish (green beans, red bell pepper, shallots) that called for a TABLESPOON of crushed red peppers, by using a TEASPOON (⅓ Tbsp) of this red hot African pepper. The dish was so hot, it seemed dangerous to eat!
In the future, I will use this in place of ground cayenne pepper when I want some extra heat. However, I’ll start by using only half the quantity of cayenne that the recipe calls for. This red hot pepper should be used with extreme caution!

  13. Rated 4 out of 5

Yes, this is really “extremely hot” and I am not a wimp when it comes to hot and spicy foods. Very nice pepper, with a definite smokiness to it, maybe a bit too much? Only other thing I would say is that the texture isn’t powder, it’s more coarse. I think I’ll like to have it ground more finely as you end up with pieces of the hot pepper finding their way in the spaces of your teeth.
Otherwise, good for any hot dish you’d like!

I’m a big spice-head and love the spicy heat brought on from the super hots (I carry around Trader Joe’s ghost pepper grinder with me, and I’m currently eating through my first bottle of The Last Dab). JEB FOODS African red pepper powder will not blow your head off if you’re a spice fan, but you’ll probably be surprised by the amount of heat it does bring. I’d put it on par with your standard powdered cayenne pepper as far as heat goes. Taste-wise, it’s a bit smokey, but not overly so. It’s also pretty far down on the ‘tastes like a pepper’ scale, which is fine by me – I don’t tend to like super ‘grassy’ tasting peppers, myself. I will say that this powder tends not to dissolve and stays pretty flakey even when used in a wet environment like a soup or stew. I liked adding this to my pho and found that I had quite a few pepper bits leftover at the bottom of the bowl (think coarse ground black pepper bits).
It’s definitely a building spice – it won’t nuke your mouth with just one taste, but you’ll have the sniffles after a full bowl of soup.

This is too hot. I opened the bag and everyone in my family started coughing and having watery eyes. And that was before eating it. If you want a hot hot pepper, it’s five stars. If you or your family have asthma or lung troubles, DO NOT BUY THIS.

It has great smoky flavor in it and it is really spicy! It is a lot spicier than the red pepper powder I have used before. Do taste it before sprinkle on your food.

Just a little bit of this pepper powder will put some serious heat in your cooking. Doesn’t have much taste, just heat. Sprinkle a bit in ramen to kick things up a notch or two. Given the potency of this pepper, I expect this one pound bag to last a very long time.

I thought this would simply be the same as ordinary cayenne, but it is actually hotter, yet with flavor as well as hotter. We are putting it into almost everything while we get over these dreadful colds. Wakes up the canned chicken noodle soup, I assure you!

I usually roll my eyes when something advertises itself as being “red hot”. I underestimated this one. I put a pinch in my mouth and although flavorful, my mouth was on fire for a full 10 minutes afterwards. I actually thought I had burns in my mouth. We all have different tolerance levels but this is my limit. 2 pinches in my chili gave it the fire I was looking for but was almost too much. I will use it sparingly in my chili. Hotter than cayenne. There is no information on label about where its from or sourcing, so I give it 4 stars.

This JEB FOODS African 1 lb/16oz Red Pepper Powder comes nicely dried and finely crushed, ready for cooking or consumption. The flavor is energizing. As for its color and heat, it depends on your level of taste. As for me, I wish it’s redder and hotter. However, I know some red pepper came with food color to make it look really red. I don’t want those. I prefer the natural color if this is what it is.
What’s most important is that my wife likes it. She is the main chef of the house. If mommy says hot, the entire family must agree.
    I recommend it!

Similar to cayenne pepper but not quite as hot. It’s flavorful and spicy, great for cooking. Also very good for adding to hot teas, especially during cold and flu season. I find that adding ground red pepper and ginger clears my sinuses wonderfully. This 1 lb bag is huge and sure to last a long time. The bag is resealable but I suspect I will need to find an alternative container to maintain the freshness of such a large amount.

    It’s really good. Really.
Some time ago I found a Kenyan hot sauce that I’ve grown addicted to. Despite my best efforts, I’ve not been able to replicate it at home, and the manufacturer seems to be going out of business so it’s becoming harder to find. With this, I was able to make a rather passable substitute. So there’s that.
But there’s more with this powder. It adds a certain something something to my pork shoulder rub. I’ve also added it to jerk seasoning to good effect. Chili…yeah, really good.
Now, it is spicy. Really. Not Carolina Reaper spicy, but there is a fair amount of heat here, so discretion is the better part of valor when it comes to this. The African Birds Eye Pepper is not to be trifled with, in my opinion. But it’s not just heat – there is a bit of a tang in there, at least to my palate, that makes it interesting and unique.
I was thinking I would try to use this to make Peri Peri sauce, but for that the whole chiles are really needed for that, not a powder. The results there were a bit disappointing, kind of like a fast-food version of Peri Peri. That aside though, for pretty much anything you’d use Cayenne pepper for, this will substitute well and add a different flavor profile to what you’re making. Heck, in mac and cheese this is good. On pizza. The fun for me is just experimenting.
It’s a good quality ingredient and I’m really rather fond of it.

I’ll start by saying that I am NOT a spicy food fan, but my other half is. I did taste this pepper just straight from the bag. It has quite a bit of heat, but it also has flavor. It isn’t just slapping you in the mouth with fire. For me it was more of a “huh…that has a pretty cool taste to it…oh dear god what have I done?’ My husband, of course, could just sit down and eat it with a spoon. His tolerance is ridiculously high, though. There really is a nice flavor there underneath the heat. I’ve used small amounts in things to great effect. It’s worked well sprinkled on vegetables before roasting or sautéing. We’re vegetarian at home, so I haven’t tried it on meats. It also works well blended into some homemade vinaigrette for a spicy punch.

When this package first arrived I stuck my finger in it to see just how hot it was. I must say it does have a nice kick to it. My plan was to use it with fried chicken then takes pictures to post for this review. Well, the family gobbled up that chicken so fast I didn’t get a chance to take any pictures.
I like to make hot wings and usually use McCormick’s hot shot (when I can find it). I think this will be a great option for my hot wings. I am going to use it in my gumbo too.
I only needed to use a little bit so this 1lb bag is going to last a long time. That is ok because it doesn’t expire until December 2018. That tells me this product is very fresh. The bag that it comes in is made of heavy plastic and is resealable. The seal is good, but I think because it is going to last me so long, I want to find another airtight container to keep it as fresh as possible.
Prior to getting this I had never heard of this company or this particular spice. I must say I am very impressed. I went to their website and looked around and just about everything they sell I have never heard of before. I think it is time to expand my horizons. If those other spices are like this one, they will be a hit too.

The Jeb African spice has a nice kick to it. The powder is coarse and has similar texture as if you grounded it yourself. The seasoning has a strong fresh black pepper taste but as far as hot and spicy it’s just ok. I was hoping for a more intense flavor profile but the only thing that really comes out is the black pepper, as the other spices taste muted. It’s still nice to have around and I will be using it for my chili. 4 stars

  26. Rated 4 out of 5

I would give this 5 stars for flavor and spice, but I have to delete one or two for poor labeling. The label doesn’t state what pepper or peppers are in this, if it’s a blend or a single variety and most importantly, where it’s sourced from. The description states “African Bird pepper” but that’s not on the packaging anywhere. I would be happier if it said exactly what it is and where it was sourced on the bag. If you don’t care about that stuff and just want some crazy hot pepper, it’s awesome.

The Jeb Foods African Pepper powder is very fresh. When it arrived, I was surprised by the color. I have seldom seen dried pepper which looked as fresh! My husband was inspired to get out a cookbook we had not used in a long time (too long, I would say) and make an African curry, which was nicely spiced, a great change of pace, and hot, very hot :). Now that that cookbook is dusted off I think that we will be using it more.
This is a very hot pepper, a few notches up from a cayenne, but not quite as hot as a habanero. It worked very well in the African curry, but I think could be used in most recipes which call for hot pepper. It tastes different than cayenne or paprika or jalpeno, or habanero, but does not add a flavor which would throw off a chile or diavalo sauce, or Thai curry. I think it could be used in any dish to which you want to add heat.
I am very impressed by the freshness and quality, would not hesitate to order from Jeb foods, and in fact, will be looking at what else they carry to replace some of our subscription spices. I have not been at all unhappy with the spices we have gotten from other companies via , but really think this is about the freshest dried spice I have seen, apart from what I have purchased at Farmer’s markets. I love the freshness, color,. quality, and the heat.

We’ve been taking the hot pepper packs that come with pizza and emptying them out in a shaker jar to add to whatever we are eating or cooking.
    — No label stating where in the world these were made/processed. No made in the USA or anything. For all I know it could be China and that would be very bad for food products, since that country is known for very inconsistent food quality standards. Thus a loss of a half-star. If we find out where it is made then star ratings could change.
+ This is better tasting than those pepper packs…by a long shot!
    + Nice and spicy.
When I first received this, I opened, dampened my fingertip, stuck it in the bag and tasted it. I started coughing as it had a good kick. The spiciness lasted a good minute or so.
    > Not sure what makes this “African” as it is a different pepper than used in pizza pepper packs, but wasn’t sure if that was all.
+ I did find several recipes for African spice blend (things like coriander, paprika, etc.). The recipes vary depending on the region of Africa. Use this red pepper powder to pump-up the spice in your spice blend.
    + Nice big bag.
NOTE: Expires or at least is “less good” in little over 12-months from receiving. Something to take note of.
+ It is ground fine, like black pepper.
    > I “assume” this is organic as there seems to be nothing but peppers in here, but unlike other products released in America, there is no clear call out if it is or not.
Worth checking out and add some good spice in everyday cooking.

Not as hot as cayenne, but reasonably hot. It will take me a long time to use up a whole pound because I only use pepper for cooking, not as a food supplement.

I purchased the red pepper powder to use in my everyday cooking. I find it to have the perfect amount of heat for my morning scramble. A nice boost to get your metabolism going for the day! It also adds a really nice flavor to my dishes and is best when added during cooking as opposed to adding it once the meal has been cooked. I think the heat of cooking the spice releases some additional flavor.
Extra points to JEB for the super fast shipping. I received the product less than 24 hours after I ordered. The spice was well packaged in a clear bag. There was a large amount of spice which made it perfect to place into small glass containers and share with my family.
Great quality spice for those who love to add some heat to their dishes. You certainly won’t be disappointed with this purchase.
